What escrow is, and why you should use it when buying online

When two strangers trade online, one of them usually has to go first. The buyer pays and hopes the seller delivers, or the seller delivers and hopes the buyer pays. Either way, someone is taking a risk.

Escrow removes that risk. It is one of the oldest ideas in trade, and it works just as well for digital products.

Escrow in one sentence

A neutral middle holds the buyer's money until the buyer confirms they got what they paid for, and only then pays the seller.

How it works, step by step

  1. The buyer pays into escrow. The money doesn't go to the seller. It is held.
  2. The seller sees the money is held and delivers: a login, a file, a license key, or a service.
  3. The buyer checks the order. Does the login work? Is the file what was promised? Is the job done?
  4. If it's right, the buyer releases the money and the seller is paid.
  5. If it's wrong, the buyer raises a problem before releasing. The money stays held while the problem is sorted out.

Why it is fair to both sides

  • The buyer never sends money straight to a stranger. If nothing is delivered, the money is not lost.
  • The seller knows the money is real and already held before doing any work. No fake transfer screenshots, no "I'll pay after".

Nobody has to go first.

What to check in any escrow service

Not every service that says "escrow" works the same way. Before you use one, check:

  • Who holds the money. It should be a business with clear rules, not a "middleman" in a WhatsApp group you know nothing about.
  • How long you have to check the order. You need enough time to test what you bought.
  • What happens in a dispute. Who decides, and how long does it take?
  • What the fees are, and who pays them.
  • What happens after you release. In most escrow systems, releasing is final. Test first.

Escrow on PlugZone

PlugZone is a marketplace for digital products and services in Nigeria where escrow is built into every order. When the marketplace opens:

  • Your money is held from the moment you pay.
  • Each listing shows its review window before you pay, up to 72 hours, so you know how long you have to test it.
  • If you don't release or open a dispute before the window ends, the money is released to the plug automatically.
  • If something is wrong, you open a dispute before releasing. The plug gets a short time to fix it, then a PlugZone admin looks at the order chat and your proof and decides.
  • Buyers pay no fee. Plugs pay a small percentage only when an order is released.
  • Releasing is final, so check everything first. See Check before you release.

The marketplace is opening soon. Create a free account now, so you're ready when it opens.
